Wadi-us-Salaam Cemetery
Wadi-us-Salaam, meaning 'Valley of Peace' in Arabic, is the largest cemetery in the world, spanning over 1,485 acres in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq. Containing an estimated six million interred souls dating back over fourteen centuries, this sprawling necropolis surrounds the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib. Beyond its profound spiritual importance for Shia Islam, the vast labyrinth of underground catacombs, ancient crypts, and dense headstones has fostered centuries of eerie legends regarding supernatural guardians, phantom funeral processions, and desert spirits that stalk the silent tombs after nightfall.
