Ziggurat of Ur
The Ziggurat of Ur is a massive step pyramid constructed during the Early Bronze Age around 2100 BCE by King Ur-Nammu in the Sumerian city-state of Ur. Built to honor the moon god Nanna (Sin), this monumental mud-brick temple structure dominated the ancient Mesopotamian skyline for millennia. Beyond its UNESCO World Heritage status, the isolated monument in the desert plain near Nasiriyah is steeped in ancient Mesopotamian mythology, local bedouin folklore regarding jinn guardians, eerie night-time chants, and phantom figures observed climbing its massive brick stairways under moonlight.
