    Nimrod Fortress (Qal'at al-Subeiba)

    Golan HeightsIsrael1228–1275

Nimrod Fortress (Qal'at al-Subeiba) is a sprawling medieval castle dramatically perched on a narrow ridge 800 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Hermon. Built by Ayyubid rulers in 1228 to defend against Crusader invasions from Damascus, the stronghold was expanded into an imposing citadel by Mamluk Sultan Baibars. Surrounded by sheer abysses and shrouded in mountain fog, the fortress is famous for legendary encounters with a giant phantom sentinel, disembodied cries in the subterranean secret passages, and ghostly lights flickering along the keep.
