    Castello di Fumone

    FumoneItaly10th–16th century

Castello di Fumone (Fumone Castle) is an imposing 10th-century papal fortress perched atop a conical hill in the Ciociaria region of Lazio, south of Rome. Famous as a key military outpost for the Papal States, the castle served as a high-security prison where Pope Celestine V was imprisoned and died in 1296. Fumone Castle is internationally famous for housing a mummified 19th-century child, the spirit of his grieving mother, and chilling reports of phantom cries and moving objects.
