    Poveglia Island

    Poveglia Island is an uninhabited island located in the Venetian Lagoon between Venice and Lido. Renowned globally as one of the world's most haunted places, Poveglia served for centuries as a plague quarantine station (lazaretto) and mass burial site where over 100,000 plague victims were incinerated or buried. In 1922, a psychiatric asylum was built on the island, giving rise to chilling accounts of a cruel doctor who experimented on patients before jumping to his death from the bell tower. Today, the overgrown ruins remain abandoned and off-limits to visitors.
