    Mount Osore (Osorezan Bodai-ji)

    MutsuJapan862 AD–Present

Mount Osore, known in Japanese as Osorezan ('Fear Mountain'), is an active volcanic mountain and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site located on the remote Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori Prefecture. Founded in 862 AD by the legendary Tendai monk Ennin, the site features steaming sulfur vents, a desolate volcanic crater, and Lake Usori. Deeply rooted in Japanese mythology as the physical gateway to the Buddhist underworld and afterlife, Mount Osore is famous for its blind female mediums known as Itako and enduring spiritual mourning traditions.
