Qasr al-Harrana
Standing isolated in the vast, windswept desert plain of eastern Jordan, Qasr al-Harrana is one of the best-preserved Umayyad desert castles in the Middle East. Built in the early eighth century during the reign of Caliph Al-Walid I, the fortress-like structure features massive stone walls, circular corner towers, and narrow arrow-slits. Because the castle lacks agricultural lands or permanent water sources, its original purpose remains an archaeological mystery, giving rise to long-standing Bedouin legends of desert Jinn, nocturnal apparitions, and phantom footsteps.
