    Perched on a stark, conical peak overlooking the Dead Sea, Machaerus (Mukawir) is a tragic ancient palace-fortress steeped in biblical history and paranormal legend. Originally constructed around 90 BC by Hasmonean King Alexander Jannaeus and lavishly rebuilt by Herod the Great, it was the site of the imprisonment and tragic beheading of John the Baptist (Yahya ibn Zakariya) following Salome's fatal dance. The desolate mountain ruins and ancient dungeon cisterns are feared for phantom mourning cries, lingering spectral shadows, and an atmospheric sense of grief.
