    Kantubek Ghost Town (Aralsk-7)

    KantubekKazakhstan1948–1992

Kantubek is an eerie, desolate Soviet ghost town situated on Vozrozhdeniya Island in the middle of the Aral Sea basin. Established in 1948 as a top-secret biological weapons testing facility code-named Aralsk-7, Kantubek once housed 1,500 scientists, military personnel, and their families. Following the Soviet collapse in 1992, the town was abruptly evacuated and stripped of critical equipment, leaving behind crumbling apartment blocks, abandoned research laboratories, empty schoolrooms, and decaying military infrastructure. Today, it stands as one of the world's most remote and hazardous ghost towns, surrounded by unsettling urban legends, lingering biochemical anxiety, and reported paranormal sightings of phantom Soviet personnel.
