Lake Shaitankol (Devil's Lake)
Lake Shaitankol, meaning 'Devil's Lake' in Kazakh, is an enigmatic, dark mountain lake perched high in the pine-forested granite cliffs of Karkaraly National Park in central Kazakhstan. Located at an elevation of 1,200 meters, this oval-shaped lake has no known river inlets or outlets, yet its dark, stagnant waters maintain a constant water level year-round. Enclosed by steep, ancient rock formations and dense coniferous forest, Lake Shaitankol is renowned across Central Asia for centuries of eerie folklore, tales of demonic drownings, unexplained magnetic and compass anomalies, and sightings of shadowy apparitions along its silent granite shores.
