Semipalatinsk Test Site (The Polygon)
The Semipalatinsk Test Site, famously known as 'The Polygon', is a vast, desolate 18,000-square-kilometer region in eastern Kazakhstan that served as the primary atomic proving ground for the Soviet Union. Between 1949 and 1989, 456 nuclear detonations—including 116 atmospheric and above-ground explosions—were conducted across its steppes, leaving behind radioactive craters, vitrified ground, abandoned subterranean bunkers, and the ghostly closed city of Kurchatov. Beyond the severe radiological and human tragedy endured by local Kazakh populations, the Polygon is shrouded in unsettling modern paranormal lore, with stories of phantom siren blares, glowing atmospheric lights, disembodied shadow figures, and intense electromagnetic disturbances.
