Shimoni Slave Caves
The Shimoni Slave Caves are an interconnected network of natural coral limestone caverns on Kenya's far southern coast. Used for centuries by indigenous Digo and Segeju communities as sacred shrines and hideouts from coastal raiders, the subterranean chambers were converted in the 18th and 19th centuries into holding pens for captive Africans before their transport to the slave markets of Zanzibar. Infused with centuries of extreme human suffering, heavy iron shackles embedded in the rock walls, and sacred Kayas tradition, the dark caverns are widely reported to be haunted by crying specters and protective Swahili spirits.
