    Vat Phou

    Vat Phou is a ruined Khmer Hindu and Buddhist temple complex situated at the foot of sacred Mount Phu Kao in Champasak Province. Dating back as far as the 5th century, this UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary predates Angkor Wat and was originally oriented around a natural mountain spring deemed sacred by ancient priesthoods. Famed for its crocodile carved sacrifice stone, serpent staircases, and ancient animist tutelary spirits (Phi Vat), Vat Phou retains a deeply haunting, mystical atmosphere.
