Plain of Jars
The Plain of Jars is a vast megalithic archaeological landscape in Xiangkhoang Province comprising thousands of ancient stone vessels dating from 500 BCE to 500 CE. Associated with complex prehistoric mortuary rituals, the site is steeped in Lao mythology involving giant spirit kings and fierce ancient battles. Heavily bombed during the Indochina War, the landscape is haunted by both ancient funeral spirits and residual wartime souls, making it one of Asia's most enigmatic and eerie historical monuments.
