Viengxay Caves
The Viengxay Caves represent an extraordinary subterranean network of over 480 natural limestone caverns in Houaphanh Province that served as a secret underground city and military headquarters during the Second Indochina War. Between 1964 and 1973, up to 23,000 Pathet Lao leaders, soldiers, and civilians lived, worked, and survived inside these limestone mountains to escape heavy American aerial bombardment. Haunted by heavy tragic history, acoustic echoes of past artillery, and residual wartime souls, Viengxay is one of Asia's most poignant historical monuments.
