Murzuk Castle and Ottoman Citadel
Murzuk Castle is a historical mud-brick and stone fortress dominating the ancient desert oasis city of Murzuk in southern Libya's Fezzan region. Originally established in the fourteenth century and later fortified by Ottoman governors as the capital of Fezzan, Murzuk was a major terminus for trans-Saharan slave and trade caravans. Local legends describe eerie phantom footsteps in empty subterranean corridors, whispers of ancient merchants echoing from mud-brick towers, and strange night lights hovering over the old execution square.
