Necropolis and Ruins of Cyrene
Cyrene, founded by Greek colonists in 631 BC in the lush Green Mountains of eastern Libya, was one of the principal cities of the ancient Hellenic world. Flanking the ancient city roads for several kilometers lies the Necropolis of Cyrene, one of the vastest and most historically important ancient burial grounds in the Mediterranean, featuring thousands of rock-cut tombs, sarcophagi, and funerary temples. Local legends describe spectral mourners in ancient Greek garments, glowing orbs hovering over tomb entrances, and ghostly whispers haunting the cliffside burial caves at dusk.
