Isalo Bara Tombs
Isalo National Park features dramatic Jurassic sandstone plateaus, deep gorges, and lush palm oases in southwestern Madagascar. The sheer canyon walls serve as the sacred ancestral burial grounds for the nomadic Bara people, who place their dead in high cliff caves sealed with stones. Protected by strict cultural taboos (fady), these cliff tombs are said to be guarded by ancestral spirits, ghost warriors, and phantom zebu herds.
