Balaclava Ruins (Arsenal Ruins)
The Balaclava Ruins, also known as the Arsenal Ruins, are the overgrown basalt stone remains of a French military fortification and gunpowder mill located at Baie aux Tortues (Turtle Bay) in northwestern Mauritius. Constructed in the 1740s under French Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the complex served as the primary armory, iron foundry, and gunpowder factory for the French East India Company. In 1774, a catastrophic gunpowder explosion destroyed the entire complex, killing over 30 French soldiers and workers while shaking the island for miles. Today, the moss-draped basalt walls, iron cannons, and flour mill ruins are considered one of the most intensely haunted ruined sites in Mauritius, notorious for phantom explosions, sulfur odors, and spectral figures in colonial uniforms.
