    Le Morne Brabant

    Le MorneMauritius18th–19th century

Le Morne Brabant is a dramatic basaltic mountain monolith rising 556 metres above the southwestern coast of Mauritius. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this rugged sanctuary served as a crucial refuge for runaway slaves, known as Maroons, throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. The mountain is world-famous for its tragic legacy, where fleeing Maroons leaped from its steep cliffs to avoid recapture, unaware that British soldiers approaching them were coming to announce the legal abolition of slavery. Today, Le Morne is considered one of the most spiritually intense and haunted natural landmarks in the Indian Ocean, rich in phantom sightings, sorrowful echoes, and solemn local veneration.
