Château de Robillard (National History Museum)
Château de Robillard, located on the outskirts of historical Mahebourg, is a grand 18th-century French colonial manor house that now houses the National History Museum of Mauritius. Built in 1772 by Jean de Robillard, this historic residence played a legendary role during the Battle of Grand Port in August 1810—the only naval victory achieved by Napoleon's navy over the British Royal Navy. During the fierce four-day battle, the château served as an emergency makeshift field hospital where commanders from both opposing forces were treated side-by-side in the main hall. Today, visitors and museum staff report eerie encounters with phantom naval officers, disembodied groans of wounded sailors, and ghostly footsteps echoing through the historic naval gallery.
