Ancienne Usine Sucrière de Dembéni / Hajangoua
The Ancienne Usine Sucrière de Dembéni at Hajangoua is an expansive nineteenth-century sugar processing complex hidden amidst lush coastal vegetation. Constructed in 1860, the site features towering stone chimneys, steam boiler foundations, and crushing mills built using local basalt and coral lime. Overseas indentured laborers endured grueling conditions here, giving rise to persistent stories of haunting apparitions, phantom machinery hums, and protective djinns.
