    Erdene Zuu Monastery

    KharkhorinMongolia1585

Erdene Zuu Monastery, founded in 1585 by Abtai Sain Khan, is Mongolia's oldest surviving Buddhist monastery. Constructed directly over the ancient ruins of Genghis Khan's 13th-century imperial capital, Karakorum, the site is enclosed by a massive stone wall containing 108 stupas. Having endured centuries of warfare, destruction, and the horrific 1937 communist purges, visitors and night caretakers report sightings of ghost warriors, spectral chanting echoing across the vast courtyard, and strange luminous orbs along the historic perimeter wall.
