    Manjusri Monastery

    ZuunmodMongolia1733

Manjusri Monastery (Manzushir Khiid) sits in a secluded, pine-forested valley on the southern slopes of sacred Bogd Khan Mountain near Zuunmod. Founded in 1733 and named after Manjusri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, this sprawling complex contained 20 temples and 300 monks before being utterly annihilated by communist forces in 1937. Today, the majestic stone ruins, cliffside Buddhist rock carvings, and giant 2-ton bronze cauldron serve as a stark memorial, where hikers and caretakers report shadowy spectral figures wandering among the pine trees and phantom chanting echoing off the granite cliffs.
