Mogren Fortress
Mogren Fortress (Fort Mogren), perched dramatically on a high rocky promontory overlooking Mogren Beach and the Old Town of Budva, is a ruined nineteenth-century Austro-Hungarian coastal fortification. Built in 1860 to command the western naval approaches to Budva, the fort saw military action in two World Wars before being devastated by fire, artillery bombardment, and the massive 1979 Montenegro earthquake. Overgrown with wild coastal flora and isolated above crashing sea waves, the fort is locally famous for ghost stories involving fallen Austro-Hungarian artillerymen, phantom lights seen out at sea, and eerie disembodied sounds echoing through its abandoned powder vaults.
