San Giovanni Fortress
San Giovanni Fortress (St. John's Fortress), towering 280 meters above the UNESCO-listed medieval Old Town of Kotor, is one of the most formidable and haunting fortification complexes in the Adriatic. Built upon ancient Illyrian and Byzantine foundations and dramatically expanded by the Republic of Venice and the Austrian Empire, the fortress is reached via a grueling stairway of 1,350 stone steps. Over two millennia of brutal sieges, devastating earthquakes, black plague outbreaks, and wartime executions have left deep tragic scars on the mountain. Visitors and night climbers report encountering phantom Venetian sentries, disembodied footsteps, phantom church bells, and mysterious shadow apparitions near the ruin's upper battlements.
