Lesendro Fortress
Lesendro Fortress, standing on an isolated peninsula (formerly an island) in Lake Skadar near Vranjina, is one of Montenegro's most historically tragic and haunting ruins. Rebuilt in 1843 by Prince-Bishop Petar II Petrović-Njegoš as a Montenegrin defensive stronghold, the fortress was captured by Ottoman forces later that same year after a bloody surprise assault. Njegoš was so deeply grief-stricken by the loss of Lesendro that it inspired the famous Montenegrin proverb 'Tuga za Lesendrom' (Sorrow for Lesendro). Decades of intense military clashes, fallen garrisons, and modern traffic rushing past its silent walls have created a powerful paranormal reputation featuring phantom cannon fires, floating lights, and mournful cries across the lake.
