    Prison of Kara

    MeknesMoroccoLate 17th Century

The Prison of Kara, known locally as Habs Qara, is a sprawling subterranean prison built beneath the imperial city of Meknes during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late seventeenth century. Designed by a Portuguese architect prisoner who was promised his freedom in exchange for constructing an inescapable dungeon, the vast underground labyrinth once held thousands of European captives, political prisoners, and enslaved labourers. Modern visitors and local residents describe deep feelings of disorientation, ghostly whispers echoing through dark vaulted arches, and phantom shadows lurking in sealed stone corridors that extend for miles beneath the city.

    Volubilis

    MeknesMorocco3rd Century BCE–8th Century CE

Volubilis, known locally as Walili, is Morocco's finest Roman archaeological site, situated on a fertile plain near the holy city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Originally a Berber settlement that grew into a prosperous Roman provincial capital famed for its olive oil production, monumental basilica, and preserved floor mosaics, the city was eventually devastated by an earthquake in the eighteenth century. Beyond its archaeological splendor, local tradition associates the ancient ruins with spectral apparitions, nocturnal Roman soldier sentries, and ancient pagan spirits.
