Fort São Sebastião
Fort São Sebastião is the oldest complete stone fortress surviving in Sub-Saharan Africa, guarding the northern point of the UNESCO-listed Island of Mozambique. Constructed by the Portuguese between 1558 and 1620, the fortress served as a crucial naval stronghold, slave trading center, and military prison. Centuries of naval battles, human suffering, and tropical isolation have fostered enduring tales of ghost ships, phantom sentinels, and disembodied voices along its coral stone ramparts.
