Sundarijal, situated at the northeastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, is famous for its cascading waterfalls, rushing Bagmati river gorges, historic hydro-electric reservoirs, and as the main entry gate to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Despite its popularity among weekend hikers and picnickers, Sundarijal has a tragic history of fatal drowning accidents, where slick granite rocks and treacherous whirlpools claim the lives of young swimmers every year. Locals, park rangers, and evening trekkers describe encounters with disembodied cries emerging from the waterfall spray, phantom figures standing beneath the torrents, and supernatural phenomena around old British-era water conduits.
