Ancient Theatre of Ohrid
The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid is a remarkable Hellenistic theatre constructed around 200 BC, nestled between two hills in the upper Old Town of Ohrid. Unique as the only Hellenistic-style theatre in North Macedonia, it was converted by the Romans into an arena for gladiator fights and public executions. Abandoned and intentionally buried by local citizens in the late 4th century due to its grim history, the unearthed stone tiers are now famous for ghostly applause and shadowy spectators lingering after night performances.
