Orheiul Vechi Cave Monastery
Orheiul Vechi Cave Monastery is an ancient Orthodox sanctuary carved directly into sheer limestone cliffs overlooking the winding Raut River. Orthodox monks dug underground cells and chapels here during the 13th-century to seek spiritual isolation and safety. Centuries of solitary prayer, Tatar invasions, and monk ascetics created a deeply sacred yet eerie atmosphere. Visitors frequently report hearing phantom Orthodox chanting and witnessing soft candlelight flickering inside empty cliffside rock caves.
