    Bánffy Castle

    BonțidaRomania15th / 18th Century

Located in the village of Bonțida thirty kilometers northeast of Cluj-Napoca, Bánffy Castle (Castelul Bánffy) was historically celebrated as the 'Versailles of Transylvania'. Once the grandest aristocratic estate in the region, the palace evolved over five centuries from a Renaissance manor into an expansive Baroque and Neoclassical complex. Devastated in October 1944 when retreating German Wehrmacht troops set fire to the castle in retaliation for Count Miklós Bánffy's anti-Nazi diplomatic negotiations, the estate spent decades in tragic ruin. Today, as ongoing preservation efforts restore its monumental halls, the grounds are world-famous both for hosting the Electric Castle music festival and for haunting sightings of WWII soldiers and lost aristocrats.
