Musanze Caves
Musanze Caves, located in northern Rwanda near the base of the Virunga Mountains, form a vast subterranean lava tube system extending over two kilometers. Created millions of years ago by basaltic lava flows from Mount Bisoke and Mount Sabyinyo, these dark, cavernous chambers have served as royal military hideouts, sanctuaries during tribal wars, and tragic mass burial sites during periods of civil conflict. Steeped in volcanic mystery and ancient mythology, the caves are widely reputed to harbor lingering spirits and disembodied subterranean whispers.
