Castello di Montegiardino
Castello di Montegiardino, situated in San Marino's smallest municipality, is an exceptionally preserved medieval fortified village dating back to the tenth century. Originally established during Lombard times and later fortified by the Dukes of Urbino and Malatesta lords, Montegiardino joined the Republic of San Marino in 1463. The historic center retains its original stone entrance gate, defensive perimeter layout, and winding cobblestone alleys. Local residents tell of shadowy specters gliding through silent archways at dusk, disembodied whisperings near the old well, and the ghost of a Renaissance maiden seen looking out from upper stone windows.
