Skull Tower (Ćele Kula)
Ćele Kula, or the Skull Tower, is a unique and gruesome historic monument located in Niš, Serbia. Built by the Ottoman Empire following the bloody Battle of Čegar in May 1809 during the First Serbian Uprising, the tower was embedded with 952 human skulls severed from fallen Serbian rebels. Intended by Ottoman governor Hurshid Pasha as a terrifying warning against rebellion, the monument instead became a sacred symbol of national martyrdom. Today, preserved inside a protective chapel with 58 remaining skulls, it remains one of Europe's most atmospheric and haunting historical sites.
