Celje Castle
Celje Castle (Celjski grad) is Slovenia's largest medieval fortress ruin complex, perched dramatically atop a high hill ridge directly above the Savinja River in eastern Slovenia. Renowned historically as the power seat of the powerful Counts of Celje, the expansive site is steeped in tragic romance, noble rivalries, and harrowing ghost stories—most notably the tragic tale of Count Frederick II and his murdered bride, Veronica of Desenice.
