    Hobyo is an ancient coastal trade capital and fortress city situated along the central Indian Ocean coast of Somalia. Established in 1878 as the capital of the powerful Sultanate of Hobyo by Sultan Yusuf Ali Kenadid, the city featured sprawling coral fortresses, sea watchtowers, and busy merchant anchorages. Today, the sun-bleached coral ruins of the Sultan's citadel stand dramatically against shifting sand dunes, where locals tell chilling tales of phantom guards, spectral merchant dhows, and sea-jinn lights.
