Arwad Island Fortress
Located three kilometers off the coast of Tartus in the Mediterranean Sea, Arwad Island is Syria's only inhabited island. Inhabited since the early second millennium BCE by the seafaring Phoenicians, who knew it as Arvad, the rocky island was fortified with colossal stone sea walls to protect its powerful merchant fleet. Throughout centuries of naval dominance, Crusader sieges, and maritime warfare, the island fortress accumulated rich nautical folklore, including tales of phantom sailors, sea-jinn calling from dark sea caves, and ghostly lights off the rocky shoreline.
