Citadel of Damascus
Situated in the northwest corner of the ancient walled city of Damascus, the Citadel of Damascus is a rare example of a medieval Islamic fortress built on flat ground rather than a high hill. Constructed in its current form during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, this massive stone fortress protected the Syrian capital against Crusader invasions and regional rivalries. Steeped in centuries of political intrigue, imprisonment, and military defense, the citadel is celebrated in local lore for ghostly echoes in its vaulted dungeons and secret underground corridors.
