Lake Iskanderkul (Lake of Alexander the Great)
Lake Iskanderkul is a breathtaking mountain lake nestled at an altitude of 2,195 meters in the Fann Mountains of northern Tajikistan's Sughd Region. Named after Alexander the Great ('Iskander' in Persian and Eastern tradition), who campaigned through ancient Sogdiana in 329 BCE, the triangular turquoise lake is world-famous for its dramatic scenery, towering peaks, and rich legendary history. According to ancient Tajik lore, the lake is haunted by Bucephalus, Alexander the Great's beloved warhorse, who drowned or plunged into the freezing depths during military operations. On nights of the full moon, locals and campers report seeing a magnificent white phantom stallion emerge from the glowing waters, galloping across the surface before vanishing, alongside eerie phantom lights and disembodied aquatic whispers.
