Khujand Fortress (Qal'ai Khujand)
Khujand Fortress (Qal'ai Khujand) is an imposing 2,500-year-old citadel located on the banks of the Syr Darya river in Khujand, Tajikistan's second-largest city and the capital of Sughd Region. Founded in the 6th century BCE under the Achaemenid Persian Empire and expanded by Alexander the Great as 'Alexandria Eschate' (Alexandria the Furthest) in 329 BCE, the fortress served for centuries as a vital Silk Road stronghold. Khujand Fortress is legendary in Tajik national history for the heroic 1219–1220 CE siege led by Tajik commander Timur-Malik against the Mongol armies of Genghis Khan. The fortress's blood-soaked history of ancient battles, mass executions, and Soviet military garrison use has left it with a dark paranormal reputation, featuring reports of phantom medieval defenders patrolling the rebuilt mud-brick ramparts, disembodied battle cries echoing near the river gate, and ghost sightings inside the subterranean museum halls.
