Childukhtaron Valley (Valley of Forty Girls)
Childukhtaron Valley ('Valley of the Forty Girls') is a stunning geological reserve located in the Muminabad District of southern Tajikistan's Khatlon Region. The valley is renowned for its forty soaring red-and-grey sandstone rock pillars that rise dramatically up to 60 meters above the alpine meadows. According to revered Tajik folklore, these monoliths are forty young women who prayed to God to turn them into stone to escape capture, enslavement, and dishonor by incoming ruthless invaders. Revered as a sacred pilgrimage site, Childukhtaron is world-famous for eerie atmospheric phenomena, including sorrowful disembodied female weeping carried on mountain winds, phantom glowing lights flickering among the rock peaks, and local reports of forty silent maidens dressed in white veiled robes seen holding hands along the ridge at twilight.
