Lake Sarez (Sleeping Dragon of the Pamirs)
Lake Sarez is a colossal, high-altitude body of water situated at 3,263 meters in the remote Pamir Mountains of eastern Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). Known as the 'Sleeping Dragon of the Pamirs', the lake was formed on the night of February 18, 1911, when a massive magnitude 7.4 earthquake triggered a catastrophic mountain collapse. A staggering 2.2 billion cubic meters of rock buried the thriving Pamiri village of Usoi, killing all 54 inhabitants instantly and creating the world's tallest natural dam—the 567-meter Usoi Dam. Over 17 cubic kilometers of water filled the canyon behind the dam, completely submerging the neighboring village of Sarez. Revered with fear across Central Asia, Lake Sarez is infamous for supernatural occurrences, including phantom underwater screams from the crushed residents of Usoi, glowing specters rising from the drowned village ruins, and the legend of an ancient river serpent trapped beneath the lake.
