    Baguia Fort (Forte de Baguia) is an early 20th-century Portuguese colonial stone fortress commanding a high ridge in Suco Alawa Leten, at the foot of Mount Matebian in Baucau Municipality. Constructed around 1910 following the bloody pacification campaigns against indigenous Timorese kingdoms, the fort served as a colonial military garrison, tax collection post, and detention center. During the 1959 Viqueque-Baguia Rebellion, the fort was besieged by anti-colonial rebels and heavy fighting occurred around its stone walls. Restored in 2014, the fort's ancient walls and subterranean holding cells remain surrounded by local tales of phantom horsemen, nocturnal crying, and spirit lights.

    Mount Matebian (2,372 meters) is Timor-Leste's third-highest peak and holds profound sacred significance in indigenous Timorese cosmology as the 'Mountain of the Souls' (Foho Matebian). In local animist tradition, Matebian is the sacred realm where the souls of all deceased ancestors gather before transitioning to the spirit world. In 1977–1978, the mountain became a tragic last redoubt for tens of thousands of Timorese civilians and FALINTIL guerrillas fleeing Indonesian military encircling offensives, resulting in thousands of deaths from intense aerial bombardment, disease, and starvation. Today, the dramatic mountain is revered as both a sacred ancestral home and a haunted wilderness filled with spirit lights, ancestral whispers, and wartime specters.
