    Balibo Fort

Balibo Fort (Forte de Balibo) is a 400-year-old Portuguese stone fortress strategically perched on a high ridge overlooking the border with Indonesian West Timor in Bobonaro Municipality. Built in the early 17th century to secure colonial trade and defense, the fort witnessed centuries of military conflict, including fierce battles during World War II and the tragic events of October 16, 1975, when five Australian-based television journalists (the 'Balibo Five') were killed by invading Indonesian forces. Restored into a heritage hotel and museum, the ancient ramparts are renowned for ghost sightings of colonial sentries, phantom gunfire, and eerie nocturnal anomalies.
