Pousada de Baucau
Perched on a lush hillside in Baucau's historic Portuguese Old Town, Pousada de Baucau is an iconic pink-walled colonial hotel constructed in 1953. Behind its striking mid-century Portuguese architecture lies a complex history of military occupation, administrative authority, and dark detention. During both World War II (under Japanese occupation forces) and the late 20th-century Indonesian military occupation, the hotel building and its surrounding hillside structures were used as military headquarters, interrogation rooms, and temporary detention cells. Today, guests and staff routinely report encountering phantom colonial figures, mysterious disembodied footsteps in empty corridors, and lingering spirit activity in the lower basement levels.
