    Former Comarca Prison (CAVR Chega! Center)

    The Former Comarca Prison (Prisão da Comarca de Dili) in Balide, central Dili, is Timor-Leste's most prominent historic detention center and memorial museum. Built by Portuguese colonial authorities in 1931, the fortress-like complex was heavily utilized by successive occupying regimes—including Japanese Imperial forces in World War II and the Indonesian military intelligence services from 1975 to 1999—for the detention, interrogation, and severe torture of thousands of Timorese political prisoners. Transformed into the headquarters of the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation (CAVR) and the Chega! National Museum, the complex retains preserved solitary detention cells ('Dark Cells') renowned for persistent ghost sightings, heavy emotional resonance, and disembodied weeping.

    Santa Cruz Cemetery

    Santa Cruz Cemetery in central Dili is one of the most historically significant and emotionally charged locations in Timor-Leste. Established in the late 19th century, the cemetery became world-famous on November 12, 1991, when Indonesian military forces opened fire on a peaceful memorial procession of over 3,000 pro-independence demonstrators, killing more than 250 young Timorese. The massacre was captured on camera by British journalist Max Stahl, galvanizing international human rights support for Timorese independence. Today, the cemetery is revered as a national shrine, accompanied by widespread reports of phantom cries, glowing specters, and intense grief lingering amidst the densely packed graves.
