Mount Ramelau (Tatamailau)
Mount Ramelau (known natively in Tetum as Foho Tatamailau, meaning 'Grandfather of All') is the highest peak in Timor-Leste and the entire island of Timor, soaring to 2,963 meters above sea level in Ainaro Municipality. Deeply revered in indigenous animist cosmology as the sacred ancestral dwelling place of the Timorese people, the mountain was crowned in 1997 with a three-meter white statue of the Virgin Mary, transforming it into the nation's most important religious pilgrimage site. Trekkers and pilgrims ascending its steep, cloud-wrapped trails routinely report supernatural encounters, including disembodied pre-dawn chanting, disorienting spirit fogs, and ancestral guardian apparitions.
