    Ai Pelo Prison

    LauhataTimor-Leste1889

Ai Pelo Prison stands as a stark, roofless coral-stone ruin overlooking the Savu Sea in Lauhata, Liquiçá Municipality. Constructed by forced indigenous labor in the late 19th century under Portuguese colonial administration, this notorious penal facility housed political prisoners, violent offenders, and local insurgents under brutal conditions until a devastating landslide and coastal flood led to its deactivation in 1939. Today, the skeletal arches and crumbling subterranean cells are widely believed by local residents to be haunted by the suffering spirits of those who perished in its damp, sea-flooded chambers.
